Stop Stressing. Start Sleeping.

The CDC recommends that adults get seven or more hours of sleep per night. The CDC also reports that more than a third of people don’t get the recommended amount of sleep. Why not? There are as many reasons as there are sheep that you tried to count before finally Googling “insomnia.” Research points to an abundance of screens as a common problem: computers, TVs, tablets, phones, and anything else that emits blue-toned light that can interfere with the body’s ability to fall asleep naturally and wake up rested. There’s also an abundance of stress—in a recent American Psychiatric Association poll, nearly 40 percent of respondents said they’re more anxious today than they were a year ago, with issues like family safety, health, and finances keeping them awake at night. And there’s plain busyness—multiple jobs, long hours, responsibilities to extended families, packed schedules, and anything else that might get you up early in the morning and keep you from getting back to bed until late.

Chronic sleep loss also puts you at risk for heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes.

All of this can seem unavoidable. If the stress of everyday life is keeping you up at night, or the multiple jobs necessary to make ends meet have you working odd shifts and long hours, it can seem like you don’t have a lot of options. And knowing how harmful stress, and the effects of stress, can be to you and those around you just makes it worse. But what can you do about it?

Over the Counter Sleep

One common approach to chronic sleeplessness is over-the-counter (OTC) sleep aids. And if your goal is simply to fall asleep, period, they could do the job as well as anything else. But if your goal is to be refreshed when you wake up, or even to just be functional, they might not work as well. Most OTC sleep aids contain antihistamines, the active ingredient in allergy medicine, which could leave you feeling slow and groggy the next day.  And it’s easy to develop a tolerance to them, which makes them less efficient at aiding your sleep over time.

Prescription sleep aids, while generally less likely to just be a bottle of allergy medicine, aren’t without their own faults, either. A lot of them have been known to cause daytime fogginess, dependency, and sleepwalking events that only seem funny when they’re happening to someone else. And if you’re sleepless because of stress, prescription sleeping pills only mask the problem—they don’t solve it. Which brings you back to the question: What can you do about it?

One thing you can do is reframe the problem. Don’t look at it as an issue of making yourself fall asleep—look at it as an issue of removing the barriers that are keeping you from falling asleep. Then look at substances like cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD. One study in 2010 found that application of CBD was associated with a change in cerebral blood flow in individuals with social anxiety, not just easing the symptoms but actually changing the way the brain reacted to anxiety. CBD literally brought them peace of mind.

A 2013 study found that CBD increased total sleep time in animal models and was linked to sleep modulation and sleep latency (the amount of time it takes for a person, or rat, to fall asleep once the lights go out). That’s important not just because rats are adorable when they’re sleeping but because it speaks highly of the potential for a good night’s sleep with CBD.
