Can CBD Help With the Pain of Menstrual Cramps?

For me, menstruation can bring a dreadful host of unpleasant symptoms. From emotional sensitivity to food cravings and menstrual cramps, I notice a variety of symptoms approximately every 28 days.

That said, I started cycle syncing and taking CBD back in 2018. By understanding my hormonal shifts, I’m able to modify my nutrition needs, exercise habits and other elements of self-care. By listening to my body and tracking changes, I’m in tune with each phase of my cycle.

What Causes Menstrual Cramps?

In the weeks before menstruation, estrogen increases and the uterus builds up its tissue. Then, menstruation begins and the uterus contracts to help expel its lining.

The uterine muscle contractions are triggered by hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, which are vital to the contractions in the uterus that occur during labor.

They also help with inflammatory signaling and constrict blood vessels around the uterus to help prepare for birth.

Unfortunately, the uterus appears not to discriminate between a baby and simple uterine lining… Thus, the monthly suffering. Higher levels of prostaglandins can be associated with more intense menstrual cramps. As some women know, cramps can not only be unpleasant, but they can also interfere with personal and professional life.

CBD for Decreasing Inflammation and Pain

Currently, CBD is not FDA-approved for the treatment of pain, inflammation, PMS, or menstrual cramps.

But research in the last decade may point to its potential for interacting with the endocannabinoid system to help modulate pain and inflammation. Derived from the hemp plant, CBD may provide calming benefits without a psychoactive effect, unlike THC.

The endocannabinoid system plays a role in the body from head to toe, and may even help regulate some of the other areas of the body which tend to be affected in PMS and menstruation, like the skin and digestive system (ladies - if you know, you know).

CBD for Menstrual Cramps

While CBD’s bioavailability varies, RESET Balance is the most efficient. It gets absorbed straight into the bloodstream, promoting internal balance during a menstrual cycle.

While I have found that CBD eases my period-related pain, every woman’s body is different. It is best to start with a few drops and then increase to a full dropper as needed to utilize its therapeutic properties.

Personally, I like to take proactive measures and increase my CBD dosage a few days before my period starts. That way, my cramping and bloating is decreased before menstruation begins.

Additionally, because the ECS plays a part in managing stress and anxiety, incorporating CBD around our menstrual cycles might help the ECS to minimize mood swings (which are standard during monthly cycling).
