Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with all the different parts of the hemp and CBD world, especially when you’re just starting out getting into using CBD wellness products. From Full Spectrum to Distillates, all the different terms and uses can be overwhelming. But that’s where I come in. I’m going to break down everything you need to know to make an informed decision about what will work best for you and why. Today’s topic: CBD Isolates.
What is a CBD Isolate?
The first thing we have to do is ask - what is a CBD isolate? Or a cannabinoid isolate? The short answer is: a form of a single chemical compound (cannabinoids) present in the hemp plant - like, CBD. The long version is that CBD isolates are extracted chemicals from the cannabis plant that have no THC, unlike full spectrum CBD products, which can contain up to 0.3% of THC by US laws (check your local laws for more information on your location) and no other cannabinoids. It’s just pure CBD.
There are many different manufacturing processes to extract CBD isolate, other cannabinoid isolates, and other compounds from the cannabis plant. These processes will leave behind pure CBD in crystal form. That crystalline solid is the isolate. Not only is it THC-free, but because of its crystalline form, it is extremely easy to measure accurate doses of CBD isolate to formulate with. Other CBD based products like broad spectrum and full spectrum oils, mix other ingredients with the cannabinoid, making it difficult to show exactly how much CBD is being consumed in each dose. You may also have more cannabinoid content in one dose and a new variety of cannabinoids in another. Not knowing exactly how much you’re using could lead to you not utilizing the CBD to its full potential by underdosing yourself. Alternatively, without precise dosing, you could end up taking too much CBD, which has been shown to potentially cause liver toxicity in high doses.
Isolate Vs. Distillate
When you’re researching, you’ll see the word CBD isolate alongside the word CBD distillate. We’ll break down what a distillate is a little bit deeper in another blog post but for now, let’s answer the next question: what’s the difference? The largest difference comes down to source. Distillates are typically created using the marijuana plant and isolates come mainly from the hemp plant. While cannabis and hemp come from the exact same plant, they have one big difference: hemp can only contain less than 0.3% THC per the U.S. 2018 Farm Bill. CBD distillates also have a lower purity level; meaning that compounds that are removed from isolates during the manufacturing process are still in a distillate. So you’ll end up with other cannabinoids in the mixture. One of those cannabinoids, keep in mind, will be THC. So if you’re not in an area where THC is legal, be mindful. Distillates can still be considered legal in all states if there is less than 0.3% THC in the product, however, proper third-party testing should be done on these products to ensure that you are not receiving more than you bargained for.
Benefits of CBD Isolates
Research has shown that CBD may influence the non-cannabinoid receptors in your body. One of those receptors is the 5-HTP (Hydroxytryptophan) serotonin receptor. Serotonin, as many know, is the chemical that affects feelings of anxiety, depression, etc. CBD potentially influencing the 5-HTP receptor could explain why so many people credit CBD for their mood support.
In one study, 79% of research participants have found that by adding CBD into their daily routine, their mood has improved. Not only have their moods improved, but 67% of participants saw improved sleep scores within the first month of research. Other studies looking at athletes who have added CBD to their post workout routine found that it helped improve their recovery time and added a boost of energy.
These claims have not been studied by the FDA and there is still much more research to be done by researchers but we look forward to seeing more studies in the future!
